Live Music:

Staying in Rye Accommodation affords you access to so many great things at your finger tips. A little pocket of culture rises out of an industrial estate in Rye where you’ll find Penny Ave, a vodka distillery with live music and DJs, and Moonah Arts Collective, a recording studio that has opened its gates to the community by putting on garage style gigs with local and Melbourne talent at the helm. Some other local entertainment staples are Ha Ba, Sound Bar, and the Rye Hotel, all on the foreshore.

The Beaches:

If you’re visiting Rye, swimming at Rye Beach on Port Phillip Bay is a must. Centrally located across the road from the Main Street on Point Nepean Road, this beach is the heart of the Rye area and has plenty of parking to boot. Rye’s front beach shouts summer fun with white sands, calm water, the Rye foreshore with public bbq facilities, and a short walk to all the amenities guests might need.

The Back Beach in Rye is home to some of the best surf spots in Victoria. We recommend 16th Beach as a fantastic place to experience the wild wonders and rugged beauty of the Bass Strait coastline. Getting there: at the corner of Tasman Dr and Browns Rd you’ll find the carpark and access to walking tracks which lead to the beach or alternatively to dune walking tracks above the sandstone cliffs. We recommend grabbing a morning coffee at 16th Beach General Store opposite the carpark and walking along the track toward the famous Lizard Head Rock. Best to go at low tide so you can explore the rock shelf on the beach and walk the full length of the sandy shore. You can check the tides here.

Shopping:

The Main Shopping Strip in Rye has it all: ice cream, cafes, restaurants, supermarket, clothing stores, bait and tackle shops, pharmacy – everything you could possibly need! Running along Point Nepean Rd, right across the street from the foreshore reserve, public BBQ facilities and playgrounds, and of course the crystal clear waters of the Bay Beach.

How do you get to Rye?

Arriving at Airport:

It is possible to hire a car from either Tullamarine or Avalon Airport. Don’t forget to book ahead of time! We recommend Kangaroo Rentals. It is also possible to hire a car once you get to the Peninsula: Avis Car Hire in Rosebud is the closest place.

By Car:

Rye is a breeze to get to by car from Melbourne. The quickest way (approx 1.5 hours) is to take the M11 (Mornington Peninsula Freeway). You can also take a scenic route out of Melbourne along the bay on State Route 33, then exit onto State Route 3 (Nepean Highway) and follow it until the Tyabb Rd exit (C782). Follow Tyabb to the end and then turn left onto Point Nepean Highway (C783).

Public Transport:

It is possible to get to Rye from Melbourne via a train and then a bus. Take the train to Frankston and then the 788 bus from Frankston. To view a map of the bus route follow this link. To get around the peninsula, see the public transport routes.

Taxis and Ubers:

It is easy to catch a taxi from Melbourne to Rye but they are less available for getting around the peninsula than they are in the city.

Things to do in and around Rye

If you’re feeling adventurous give the Scuba Doctors a call and organise a dive trip accompanied by a professional and local expert or get kitted out with gear and snorkel around the rock pools. We recommend caution when snorkelling at the back beach. Please always stick to rock pools as the beach is unpatrolled and often hazardous due to strong rips and large waves.

Visit Hillock Downs Farm Gate in Rye: for over 100 years Hillock Downs has sat atop the rolling hills of prime farmland in Rye. Their dedication to sustainable and traditional farming produces delicious grass fed beef, preservative free products, and locally grown veggies. Eddie and Sally love and respect their animals and work tirelessly to promote ethically farmed beef.

Dundas Street Shops: near the Back Beach, the Dundas Street shops are a local stapple with Store 360 (artisanal products and fresh food in every direction); Hunter Vegan Cafe; the Corner Store with the best chips and gravy on the Peninsula, a Bottle shop, discount Surf and swimwear, and a Pizzeria.
